How to Replace an audi key programming G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor audi smart key replacement is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jump in the chain link of the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are various pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors aren't firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. When I start the engine without sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each of the injector holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got zero Ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, i believe that i've eliminated everything else. But i am afraid i might have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. It is easy to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know the position and speed the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. To do this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire in gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. The good news is that they are very cheap and easily accessible particularly in the case of the Bosch unit which is what we have. If you prefer, GM's version of this component is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the reason behind a slew of problems in your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your audi spare key cost because it relays information to the ECU on how fast or slow the engine of the car is spinning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU then processes this signal to regulate fuel, timig, and boost, and also transmitting it to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. There should be an average resistance cost of audi key replacement 1000 ohms between these two points.
